“I played bocce in DC, but when I moved to Beacon Hill I heard there was a lawn bowling club near my house. One day I walked by it and decided to watch. All of a sudden a friendly gal came bounding over and asked if I wanted to play. It was Lauren Heyne and I decided to give it a try. I like the difference from bocce, more of a sport than a past-time. I've enjoyed the camaraderie in the women's league, and learning from the older masters. I've been a member for 6 years and it means so much to me. It makes me especially proud to be a resident of Beacon Hill”. Gina Tolentino
I was listening to the radio one afternoon and some world touring bicycle guy mentioned that there was a good time to be had on the greens on Beacon Hill that very evening. I went, met him (Willie Weir) and immediately fell for it. I love the swing... exploring, examining, and trying to perfect it. The riddle of 'trying not to try too hard'. The game: analyzing 'heads', choosing shots, plotting strategies. Responding to pressure. Slowly building faith in your ability. Bowling: It's kind of easy but it's REALLY hard. And I really enjoy the people I've met at JPLBC. It's a community.~ Chris Davis
Congratulations to our own Nancy Nishikawa who has been elected to the 2016 Bowls USA Hall of Fame! Nancy's selection is no surprise to those who admire her competitive bowling and appreciate her tireless work for the Jefferson Park club. It is those two qualities that secured her spot in the Hall of Fame. The winner of a multitude of local and division tournaments, competitor at the National Championships 22 times, and a tireless champion for the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club are the qualities that caught the eye of the committee and secured her spot in the 2016 Bowls USA Hall of Fame. Nancy becomes the 6th bowler from the NorthWest Division to join the ranks of so many esteemed champions and competitors in the Bowls USA Hall of Fame.
"I had been trying to find a sport on Beacon Hill that would be both competitive AND have a friendly community feeling. Jenny Mears told me about lawn bowling and sure enough, at JPLBC I found just the right mix: people who are serious about their sport, yet wholeheartedly welcoming to all levels of experience. I was so delighted to find this wonderful group; so diverse in age, background, and experience levels, yet all united in their great inclusive attitude. Everyone I have played with has been in equal parts earnest in improving their own game, and generous with helping a beginner." -Kathryn Rathke
